To Whom It May Concern ...

Dear producers of Afro Samurai,

While visiting New York recently for the world premiere of Yatterman, Japanese director Takashi Miike apparently told everybody who would listen that he'd really, really like to make a live action Afro Samurai. Really. We're not making that up. So call him.

I'd buy that for a Dollar!

(And Hi, Grady, if you are lurking)

That's something i'd like to see...i'm sure Miike would do a very good job.

Afro Samurai for Takashi Miike's Hollywood film debut? Not a bad idea. Could be better than the live action version of Ninja Scroll.

That would be amazing.

i recently saw Afro Samurai: Resurrection on Blu-ray and i'm not too sure it'll translate well into live-action. the hyper stylised action that anime provides will be quite the challenge to realise with actual people.

That would be like a dream come true for me.

user-pic

That's not likely to happen. Hollywood is already making the film.

I'm probably one of the few fans of the series who wouldn't like to see this happen with Sam Jackson or for that matter, in any live action format at all. Then again I haven't seen anything recent by Miike so I don't know how he's laying it down these days..

He would have to make the film in English and as a result it would be a great looking but nonetheless unwatchable disaster. He simply cannot, for all his talent, direct a movie in a language he doesn't speak. IMPRINT and DJANGO make my ears cringe just from the memory of what they endured during my viewings of them.

I agree. The English in IMPRINT was excruciating.

Eck. I really wouldn't want to see this. Just bought Ressurrection, the animation kicked my ass, but it grew tiresome in parts, having absolutely ZERO story that mades any sense. It brought back memories of seeing Pistol Opera in theater, being really high, and falling asleep halfway through. (yeah, yeah, Seijun is awesome, it grew on me later on video and yes, I know it's a pseudo remake of Branded to Kill.)

And I realize that's part of Afro's charm, and by the 5th beer and 3rd whiskey shot I was having a ball. But as far as hip, samurai/western, hip hop animes go, it doesn't hold a candle to Champloo though. But I guess they're totally different beasts.

But what makes Afro hold up is purely in the style of anime and character design that can't be replicated in live action.

Miike needs to direct another Ryu Murakami script. Or Ryu needs to direct another film.

Miike almost doing a Coin Locker Babies film..... Now that I'd that got really excited about.

If they would follow the Japanese formula of translating anime in to live action ala Cutey Honey and Yatterman then it shouldn't be a problem.
Miike would just need a co-director to help him out with the english, I nominate Norihiro Koizumi director of Gachi Boy.

hmmmm i think it would suit Kitamura Ryuhei better.
